Is E-Bike Insurance Mandatory?

Updated on
Est-il obligatoire d’assurer son vélo électrique ?

In Switzerland, electric bikes are enjoying tremendous success, both in cities and for longer journeys, or as electric cargo bikes . But one question often arises: is it mandatory to insure your electric bike?

The answer depends on the type of e-bike you own. Some models are considered simple bicycles, while others are considered light mopeds. In this article, we clearly explain the rules, mandatory and recommended insurance, and typical costs.

Legal categories of electric bicycles in Switzerland

Swiss law distinguishes between two main categories:

  • Electric bike up to 25 km/h : assistance cuts out at 25 km/h, motor limited to 250 W. Legally, it is considered a classic bike.

  • Fast electric bike up to 45 km/h : assistance goes up to 45 km/h, motor up to 500 W. This type of bike is similar to a light moped.

  • Heavy electric cargo bikes : Depending on their power and weight, they fall into one or the other category, with the same requirements.

For fast electric bikes, certain rules apply: compulsory helmet use, speedometer, yellow plate with sticker and specific civil liability insurance.

Insurance: compulsory or not?

  • For 25 km/h electric bikes , there is no mandatory third-party liability (TP) insurance . If you cause an accident, your private liability insurance will cover the damage. It is therefore essential to have one.

  • For 45 km/h electric bikes , vehicle liability insurance is mandatory . You will receive a yellow plate with a sticker from the Automobile Service in your canton. This sticker is proof that you are insured.

Recommended additional insurance

Even if liability insurance covers damage caused to third parties, it is still advisable to insure the value of your electric bike itself.

  • Theft and damage : covered by specific bicycle insurance or by household insurance . Note that household insurance only covers theft at home . To cover theft outside (station, work, street), you must add the “simple theft outside the home” option.

  • Assistance : some insurance companies also offer breakdown assistance or repatriation in the event of a breakdown or accident.

How much does electric bike insurance cost?

The premiums vary depending on the value of the electric bike , the deductible and the options chosen:

  • 25 km/h electric bike : around 60 to 120 CHF/year for theft and breakage cover.

  • 45 km/h electric bike : between 150 and 300 CHF/year for comprehensive insurance including theft, in addition to compulsory third-party liability insurance.

Comparing offers from several companies such as TCS , AXA , Helvetia , Mobilière or Allianz allows you to find the best coverage/price ratio.

Quick procedure depending on your electric bike

  • 25 km/h electric bike : Check that your private liability insurance is active, then check your household insurance. Add the "simple theft outside the home" option if necessary.

  • 45 km/h electric bike : Apply for a yellow license plate from your canton's motor vehicle department, which includes mandatory third-party liability insurance. Add theft/casco insurance to protect the value of your bike.

Recent changes in the law

Since April 1, 2024 , fast electric bikes (45 km/h) must be equipped with a speedometer . Owners have until April 1, 2027 to bring their bike into compliance.

Best practices to limit theft and reduce premiums

  • Always use an approved anti-theft device and park in a well-lit and secure area.

  • Engrave the electric bike or register it in an official register.

  • Keep receipts and photos to prove the value of your bike in the event of a claim.

  • Adjust the insured amount to the real value of your electric bike, including battery and accessories.
